Copilot Enablement FAQs
Based on an interview with Sam Rominger, Integrated Technologies Engineer, Storage and Virtualization
How would you explain Copilot to someone who doesn't understand what it does?
Think of it as a personal assistant for every employee — it can help you research, locate documents or information quickly, and help turn an idea into something actionable.
Before rolling out Copilot company-wide, what's usually missing?
Data Loss Prevention (DLP). This is a set of tools, processes and policies designed to detect, monitor and block unauthorized access or sharing of sensitive data outside an organization. Most clients haven't thought about DLP at all before Copilot, but it becomes a much bigger priority once Copilot is in place. This is because it introduces AI access to a large volume of internal data.
What does DLP actually do?
Microsoft Purview's DLP identifies "sensitive information types" (using built-in or custom classifiers) and can block that data from being shared externally or read by Copilot — even for users who technically have access to it. Documents can also be labeled at a sensitivity level, and Copilot can be explicitly blocked from reading anything labeled highly confidential.
What's a real-world risk DLP protects against?
Example: someone accidentally emails a sensitive document (like a Social Security card) to an entire distribution list instead of one person. If sent internally, it may be retrievable; if sent externally, it's essentially unrecoverable. DLP configured ahead of time would catch and block that before it happens.
Can Copilot access sensitive files like a photo of a Social Security card?
It depends on your DLP configuration. Since AI's ability to visually recognize sensitive content (like scanned images) is still evolving, it's safer to explicitly label and restrict such files rather than rely on Copilot/the LLM to correctly self-identify sensitive material.
What does the Copilot Enablement Program include?
It analyzes and scans your data to build a picture of your organization's Copilot-readiness, checks whether DLP is in place, and includes an end-user training component to help staff get comfortable using Copilot and identify practical use cases for their workflows.
How do clients typically see ROI from Copilot?
Mostly through time savings — automating or streamlining manual internal processes (via agents or workflow integrations) frees employees to focus on higher-value work instead of repetitive tasks.
How do you balance AI-driven efficiency with maintaining accuracy and standards?
Through structured discovery such as group sessions (similar to Koltiv’s internal "AI roundtables") where employees raise specific pain points and technical teams identify where Copilot or automation could help. Trust is built incrementally, with ongoing validation that the AI output is accurate before fully relying on it.
